About the Walking Time Calculator

This calculator estimates walking time by dividing the distance by walking speed. You can switch between kilometers, miles and meters and provide a walking speed in km/h or mph.

Parameters we support

  • Distance — numeric value; unit chosen from km/miles/meters.
  • Speed — walking speed (km/h or mph if unit is miles). Typical defaults provided.

Possible improvements

You can extend this tool by adding start time (to show arrival), elevation gain adjustments, terrain modifiers, and calories burned estimation (requires weight).

Estimating Walking Time by Distance

Average walking speed is 5 km/h (3.1 mph, about 83 m/min or 100 steps/min). At this pace: 1 km takes 12 minutes; 1 mile takes 19.4 minutes. Factors that affect speed: age (elderly adults average 4–4.5 km/h), fitness level, terrain (uphill slows by 30–50%), surface (soft sand reduces speed significantly), and load (carrying a heavy pack reduces speed by 15–25%). Urban walking with traffic lights adds 2–5 minutes per km on average.

Health guidelines recommend 150 minutes of moderate-intensity walking per week. At 5 km/h, this equals 12.5 km per week across 5 days = 2.5 km (30 min) per day. Long-distance hikers average 4–5 km/h including elevation changes and rest stops. Planning a walking route: add 10 minutes per 100 m of elevation gain (Naismith's rule). A 10 km hike with 300 m elevation gain takes approximately 10 × 12 min + 30 min = 2 hours 30 minutes.
