About the Drive Time Calculator

This calculator estimates driving time by dividing the distance by average driving speed. You can switch between kilometers, miles and meters and provide a speed in km/h or mph.

Parameters we support

  • Distance numeric value; unit chosen from km/miles/meters.
  • Speed driving speed (km/h or mph if unit is miles). Typical defaults provided.

Possible improvements

You can extend this tool by adding traffic delays, estimated stops, or fuel consumption estimators.

Calculating Drive Time Accurately

Drive time = Distance ÷ Average Speed. For 150 miles at 60 mph: 150/60 = 2.5 hours = 2 hours 30 minutes. The key variable is average speed — which includes acceleration, deceleration, traffic, speed limits, and road type. Motorway/highway driving averages 65–75 mph; city driving averages 20–30 mph; rural roads average 45–55 mph. For mixed routes, break the trip into segments and sum each segment's time.

Add rest stops for long drives: the Highway Safety manual recommends a 15-minute break every 2 hours. Add 10–15% buffer for traffic, roadworks, and unexpected delays on unfamiliar routes. For mapping apps, real-time traffic data is more accurate than static drive time calculations. Fuel cost for the trip = (Distance ÷ MPG) × Price per gallon.
