Early Withdrawal Penalties (Before Age 59½)

Withdrawing from a Traditional 401(k) before 59½ incurs:

  • 10% early withdrawal penalty on the amount withdrawn
  • Ordinary income tax on the full withdrawal amount
  • Total effective cost can be 30–45%+ of the withdrawal

Exceptions: age 55 rule, SEPP (72(t) distributions), disability, death, qualified domestic relations order (QDRO), certain medical expenses.
