Credit Card Interest & Payoff Math
How Credit Card Interest is Calculated (Daily Periodic Rate)
Daily Rate = APR ÷ 365
Monthly Interest = Average Daily Balance × Daily Rate × Days in Billing Cycle
Most US issuers use the Average Daily Balance method. At 20% APR, your daily rate is 0.0548%. On a $5,000 balance, that's roughly $82.19 interest per month.
Worked Example — $5,000 at 19.99% APR
- Monthly rate = 19.99% ÷ 12 = 1.666%
- Monthly interest on $5,000 = $5,000 × 0.01666 = $83.30
- At minimum 2% ($100/month): payoff takes ~93 months, total interest = $4,311
- At $200/month: payoff takes 32 months, total interest = $1,281
- At $500/month: payoff takes 11 months, total interest = $444
